October Is Coming: Plan Your Fall Bucket List

October is almost here, and now that fall has officially, well, fallen it’s time to start thinking of some of the fun things that you can do during the month (and beyond) as the days turn cooler. One of the best things about autumn is that there are literally so many things to do, and that’s not even counting college football.

Carving Some Memories

First, let’s talk pumpkins. Carving jack-o-lanterns is a great family activity as Halloween approaches. But if you don’t want your children using sharp knives to carve silly or scary faces on the traditional, seasonal squash, don’t worry: Paints and markers can also work. Just remember to put down newspapers or some other kind of disposable material first, in order to make cleanup a breeze whether you’re carving or painting. And hey, when you pull out the insides of those jack-o-lanterns, save the seeds. You can season and roast them for a healthy snack that the whole family will love. Just remember that whenever you’re doing something creative like this with your family, you’re creating core memories that your children will cherish for a lifetime.

Plan Ahead

It seems like Thanksgiving is a lifetime away, but November is just around the corner, and a big meal like Thanksgiving dinner isn’t going to plan itself. Will you have a large, more formal gathering with extended family, or will the meal be more intimate, with just immediate family members? Some folks who don’t have large extended families, or who don’t live close enough to their family members to make it home, plan “Friendsgiving” with others who are in similar situations. Either way, it’s a time for thoughtfulness, and that extends to the food you’re planning to serve for the big day.

Be Helpful

Fall is one of those times of year when it’s a great time to reach out to your neighbors. Maybe there’s an elderly person on your street who needs help raking their leaves, or who might enjoy a home-cooked meal that didn’t come from their home. Reach out and show someone a touch of kindness and thoughtfulness this October. You’ll be glad you did.
